lecture notes #8 Flashcards
(12 cards)
What’s unique regarding a single-zone HVAC system compared to other HVAC systems?
heat/cool thermostat controls both the furnace and condensing unit
what does a unitary air conditioning system coupled with electric heat do?
through-wall AC unit provides cold air during summer and the electric baseboards provide heat during winter
what is a register used for?
is used for supply air. they usually have a damper to control air flow
what’s a grille used for?
is used for return air. they usually don’t have a damper.
is a single zone HVAC system used for heating, cooling, or both?
both
What does a multiple zone HVAC “Constant Volume” system have, that other HVAC systems don’t have? what is it used for?
An Electric coil. this adds extra necessary heat, that isn’t already provided by the primary HVAC unit. they only apply heat to their particular zone.
What’s the purpose of a VAV?
To adjust the zone temperature by adjusting the volume of supply air
What’s the typical application of Multi zone HVAC systems?
medium size buildings
Why wouldn’t you need a bypass in a VAV primary system?
the amount of S/A produced by the primary HVAC unit is the same required by the zone. no bypass is needed
what are the 2 ways that water coming from a boiler is used?
- direct heat exchange with the zone through wall fins, convectors, etc.
- water exhanges heat with the supply air inside the cabinet fan
What is the purpose of a radiant panel in an HVAC constant volume system?
A secondary source of heating for the zone. the hot water coming from the boiler can pass through these panels to provide more heat during the winter time.
What extra benefit does an HVAC system using fan coils, have that a heating coil system doesn’t?
HWS supply and CWS can be sent simultaneously making it useful for buildings that need heating and cooling simultaneously.
