scope of teh study
variables
attributes
3 characteristics of variables
dependence
mutually exclusive
exhaustive
- determined primarily by the selection of variables that the
research study will focus on. - requires the careful
selection of variables that will be investigated,
scope of research
refers to any characteristic that can have different values or traits that may vary across research participants.
variable
are measured, controlled, and manipulated
by the researcher.
variable
are important elements of a variable.
attributes
refers to the value assigned to a
specific variable.
attributes
variable agreement may have the following attributes-
agree
disagree
strongly agree
strongly disagree
refers to how the variable is considered in a cause-and-effect relationship.
dependence
2 types/kind of dependence variable
independent & dependent variables
characteristics that are changed.
manipulated, or selected by the researcher.
independent variables
those that change because of changes to the independent variable.
dependent variable
means that a participant or respondent cannot possess
two attributes of a variable.
mutually exclusive
means that the researcher should consider all possible
attributes of a certain variable.
exhaustive
kinds of variables
continuous, discrete, categorical variable
variables that may have an infinite number of values and
may vary widely among the research participants.
Continuous variables
variables that have specific limits to their value.
Discrete variables
these cannot be expressed in numbers but are given in
non-quantitative, descriptive terms.
Categorical variables
describes the various limitations that arose during the
design and conduct of the study.
delimitation of the study
are constraints on certain aspects of the research, such as the interpretation of data and the applicability and usefulness of the results and findings.
delimitation of the study
identifies the other variables that were not considered for the
study.
delimitation of the study
5 possible limitations that may arise
sample size
Lack of available and/or reliable data.
Lack of prior studies.
Chosen data collection method.
Nature of the information collected.
will determine the quality of data and the relationships that will be identified among the variables.
Sample size
Missing and unreliable data will limit the
scope of analysis and the ability of the researcher to determine meaningful
trends and relationships among the data.
Lack of available and/or reliable data.
