Q

Matthew 1 and Luke 3:23-38 share two different perspectives on the Lord’s lineage. How do these different aspects qualify him as Messiah?

A

-Matt. 1: Shows Jesus’ lineage through Joseph because royal lineage came through the father’s side, showed Jesus’ relation to David, thus fulfilling the requirement that the Messiah be heir to the throne of David
-Luke 3: Traces Jesus’ lineage back to Adam, relates him to the whole human race and showing how as Messiah, he would provide universal salvation

Q

What is the significance of the name “Jesus,” and why was the Messiah to bear this name. Give scriptural references.

A

Jesus means “Savior” (Luke 1:31); Messiah to bear this name because he was to save the people from their sins, much as Joshua (who had the same Hebrew name) saved Israel from their enemies (ultimate fulfillment of the name) (Matthew 1:21)
