Lesson 1 Flashcards
Anatomical Terminology, Body Organization, Skeletal Introduction
Anterior
Front, Before
Ex: anterior crest of tibia
Posterior
Back, behind
ex: the calcaneus is posterior to the digits
Dorsal
back (used for animals)
same as posterior
Think: Dorsal fin
ex: the scapula is dorsal to the chest cavity
Ventral
Belly side
like anterior in humans
ex: the sternum is ventral to the heart
Medial
toward midline longitudinal axis
Think: Med = toward the middle
ex: the sternum is medial to the ribs
Lateral
away from midline
think: lats - are away from the middle
Proximal
moving along limb toward the torso attachment
Think - proximity to torso
ex: the proximal epiphyses of the humerus articulates with the scapula
Distal
away from an attached base
ex: the distal epiphyses articulates with the radius and ulna
Superior
above (toward the head)
ex: cervical vertebrae are superior to the thoracic
Inferior
below
the lumbar vertebrae are inferior to the thoracic vertebrae
Cranial
Same as rostral
towards the head (cranium)
the skull is rostral to the neck
Rostral
same as cranial
towards the head (cranium)
the skull is _______ to the neck
Caudal
tail
Think: below, or the opposite of cranial
ex: the sacrum is caudal to the vertebrae
Superficial
located close to or on the body surface
ex: the skin is superficial to the muscles
Deep
further beneath the body structures than superficial structures
ex: muscles are deep to the skin
Frontal (coronal)
Divides the anterior and posterior portions of the body
Coronal plane refers to head region
Parasagittal
divides the right and left, but the sides are unequal
runs parallel to the midsagittal plane
Midsagittal (medial)
Midsagittal Plane
Divides the body right and left on the midline
think: sagittal crest
Transverse
Transverse or horizontal plane
divides the superior and inferior portions of the body
Axial
Region: head, neck, and trunk
Appendicular
Region: Limbs
(not the head or trunk)
Orbital
region: eye
Buccal
region: cheek
think the chipmunk gas station
Oral
region: mouth
