Q

Describe the lock and key model

A

• Substrate fits into enzyme because it is complementary to shape of enzyme
• Product released as it is no longer complementary
• Explains why enzymes are specific to substatte

Q

What is the induced fit model?

A

• Substrate and active sit not complementary
• Active site changed shape when substrate binds which creates strain on substrate, lowering activation energy
• Active site returns to original shape after products leave

Q

Describe properties of enzymes

A

• Specific due to complementary shape (determined by sequence of amino acids)
• Fast-acting with high turnover rate
• Soluble due to have hydrophilic R-groups on outside of molecule
