Lesson 1 - Methods of Nutrition Flashcards
What is nutrition?
Process by which an organism obtains energy and/or matter to develop snd maintain structure and life functions
What are autotrophs?
Organisms which can create their own complex organic molecules from inorganic molecules using light or chemical energy
Describe difference between chemoautotrophs and photoautotrophs
Chemoautotrophs uses energy from chemical reactions to create organic molecules where’s photoautotrophs use light as energy to carry out photosynthesis
What are heterotrophs?
Organisms which can’t produce their own organic molecules so they consume large complex molecules from other organisms.
Describe nutritional process of holozoans
• Ingest
• Digest
• Absorption
• Assimilation
• Egestion
What is assimilation?
When absorbed nutrients are used for energy, repair and growth
What are saprotrophs?
Organisms which feed on dead/decaying organic matter by secreting enzymes, digesting food externally. Soluble molecules then absorbed via diffusion or active transport
What are parasites?
Organisms which live in or on another organism, obtaining nourishment at the expense of it
