Lesson 1- Nervous System Flashcards
(18 cards)
How many nerves are in each vertebrae?
Cervical= 8
Thoracic= 12
Lumbar=5
Sacral=5
Coccygeal=1
What are the 4 main nerves in the arm?
- Radial
- Muscolocutaneous
- Median
- Ulnar
What are the 4 main parts of the brain?
- Cerebrum
- Diencephalon
- Cerebellum
- Brain stem
What are the four main parts of the Brain Stem?
- mid brain
- Pons
- Medulla oblangata
What is the main cell in the CSF?
Epindymel Cells
What are the names of the ventricles that hold the CSF in the brain?
- Lateral
- 3rd ventricle
- 4th ventricle
What is the choroid plexuses?
It holds a lot of epidymel cells in the lateral ventricles. It is where majority of the CSF comes from.
What are the fissures of the brain?
- Longitudinal- the midline
- Lateral- runs across the side
- Transverse- separates the cerebrum from the cerebellum
What are the names of the surfaces in the brain?
- cortex- the whole folded surfaces underneath the meninges
- Gyrus- The folded parts
- Sulcus- The bits in between
What are the 3 layers of the meninges and the functions?
- Dura mater- Most superior layer. Very thick and is for protection
- Arachnoid mater- Looks like spider wed. this holds the CSF
- Pia mater- Thinest layer. Separates neurons from CSF
What is grey and white matter?
Grey- Bundles of Neuron bodies
White- Bundles of axons and dendrites
What are the support cells in the PNS and name the functions?
- Schwann cells- Myelinates axons
- Satellite cells- Surrounds and supports cell bodies
- Ependymal cells- circulates fluid and maintains environment
What are the four support cells in the CNS and name the functions?
- Astrocytes- Anchors neurons to blood vessels
- Oligodendrocytes- Myelinates axons
- Microglial- Protective cell
- Ependymal- Maintains environment
What is the main cell within the CNS neuron?
Parenchymal cell
What are the four major structures in the brain and their functions?
- Thalamus- Heart shaped structure that sends information to different parts of the brian
- Hypothalamus- Sits under the thalamus and regulates body temp and heart rate
- Basal Ganglia- for motor movements
- Corpos Callosum- Biggest white matter tract. major connections between left and right brain
What are the main nerves in the leg?
- Sciatic
- Common Fibular nerve
- Tibial Nerve
What are the three types of receptors?
- Free nerve ending
- Mechano-receptor
- Proprioceptor
