Lesson 1: What is UX Design All About? Flashcards
(39 cards)
Why is UX Design important to so many businesses today?
Users make or break a product after release.
What is User Experience(UX)?
How a user feels when interacting with a product or service.
In general, what are UX practitioners interested in?
The relationship between human users and computers and computer-based products; websites, applications, and systems.
What is a UX Designers?
Someone who investigates and analyzes how their users feel about their products. They then apply this knowledge to product development in order to ensure that the user has the best possible experience with a product.
UX Design is all about guiding _____ ________ to ensure how users feel about using their products.
product development
What’s the main methodology used for UX projects?
User-centered Design
What is User-Centered Design?
A process by which designers continuously consult users to design the right products
What does UCD stand for?
User-Centered Design
What are the five key steps of the UCD process to develop better products?
- Innovation
- Research (Understanding Users)
- Use Cases (Defining Interaction)
- Design (Prototype and Evaluate)
What are Use Cases about?
How will users use the product or service
UCD is the process where…
the user is consulted throughout the design and development stages to ensure that the finished product/service matches their needs and requirements.
What are the three main alternatives to UCD?
- Self-focused design
- Experience-based design
- Activity-oriented design
What is a Self-focused design?
Designers act as representatives of the user base. They design for themselves and make the assumption that their users think and feel in the same way as them.
What is an Experience-based design?
Experience-based design builds on UCD, if you have a highly experienced team of designers and developer then you can use experience-based design to cut corners.
What is an Activity-oriented design?
Sometimes the design and development team won’t be familiar with a particular activity. If a project is a “first of its kind” within your organization then it can be useful to map out the activities you expect users to conduct. The team can then work through these activities to get a better understanding of the product itself. This technique can be used as well as UCD or in place of it if the project is a small functional change in an existing product.
T or F: UCD is the only methodology in UX.
False. UCD may be the most valuable methodology but there’s also self-focused, experience-based, and activity-oriented design.
Which development method moves all activity in the project from one stage to the next and each activity is fully documented and signed off before the next activity begins?
Waterfall Development
Which development method goes through a quick development cycle then followed by a quick review and then another development cycle? (repeated as many times as necessary)
Agile Development
What are the six tips for getting UX Embedded within the Development Team?
- Start Early - before the development team get involved in the project, you should be prepared to demonstrate the value of UX design.
- Develop Relationships - talk to the whole team, sell yourself and the benefits of a UX design approach.
- Play for the Team - Attend meetings. Be a part of the development process. Don’t just hand over your designs and hope for the best.
- Work in Parallel with Development - Have your wireframes ready before development begins and then work on interactions during an Agile sprint prior to the interaction being developed.
- Keep Testing - If you’re not testing regularly problems are going to creep in. Make sure that you don’t let the development diverge too far from the design before you pull things back in line with the UX design scope.
- Be Inclusive - UX is everyone’s responsibility; if you clearly communicate your vision and reasons for UX, it’s very likely that you’ll be able to turn others into UX ambassadors too.
What are Don Norman’s three levels of design?
- Visceral Design
- Behavioral Design
- Reflective Design
According to Don Norman, which of the three levels of emotional system is responsible for conscious thought?
Reflective Design
What is Visceral Design?
“Concerns itself with appearances”. This level of design refers to the perceptible qualities of the object and how they make the user/observer feel.
What is Behavioral Design?
“Concerns itself with pleasure and effectiveness of use”. Refers to the practical and functional aspects of a product of anything usuable we are capable of using in our environment.
What is Reflective Design?
“Considers the rationalization and intellectualization of a product”. Judging a product according to our more naunaced and rational side. Determining what it means to us as an individual.
