  • Test Tip: Draw A Number Line To Help You*

Adding With Number Lines
Example: 1 + 4 =
Start At The Location Of The First Number. Find The Number 1 On The Number Line. For Adding (+) Count To The Right. In This Example Move 4 Spaces To The Right. The Answer: Is The Number You End On. (5) In This Example.

A

Subtracting With Number Lines

If You Are Subtracting(-) Count To THe Left.
Examples: 1-4=
Start At The Location Of The First Number. Find The Number 1 On The Number Line. Move Or Count To The Left. Count 4 Spaces. 1-4=-3

The Answer Is (-3). Read Out Loud As “Negative Three” or “Minus Three”
The Answer Is Negative Because The Second Number(4) Is Bigger Than The First Number(1). If You Take Away More Than Youn Have , You End Up With A Negative (Minus) Number Less Than Zero.

Adding & Subtracting Negative Numbers

Sometimes In Math You Need To Add Or Subtract Negative Numbers. There Is A Rule To Remember About Adding & Subtracting Negative Numbers: THEY WORK THE OPPOSITE WAY AROUND! Adding A Negative Number Is The Same As Subtracting. Subtracting A Negative Number Is The Same As Adding.
Examples: 1–4=
Read Out Loud “One Subtract Negative Four.” Do You Notice There Are Two Signs That Look Negative (Subtracting) Right Next To Each Other? When This Is The Case You Do The Opposite Of The Subtraction Sign: COUNT RIGHT!
Answer: 1–4= 1+4=5

Test Tip: Subtracting A Negative Is The Same As Adding A Positive
