Lesson 5: Division Flashcards
(2 cards)
This Lesson Teaches Division. Dividing Is Like Multipication, Instead Of Combining Groups Of Numbers, You Are Seperating Them.
You Will Learn:
* What Is Division?
* What Are Dividends, Divisors, And Quotients?
* What Are The Rules Of Division?
* How Do You Apply Formulas To Test Problems?
What Is Division?
Division Seperates Numbers Into Smaller Parts. Like Multiplying Things. Dividing Things Is A Skill You Use In Everyday Life You Use Division When You Measure A Whole Into Equal Pieces.
Example: Katya Has 6 Cans Of Soup, She Wants To Share The Soup Equally With Her 2 Friends. How Many Cans Will Each Person Get?
Katya Starts With 6 Cans Of Soup. She Needs To Split The Number 6 Into 3 Parts. 6 Cans Seperated, Or Divided, Into Equals 2 Cans Each.
The Problem Is Shown As 6/3=2 The / Symbol Tells You To Divide.
Remainders
Sometimes When You Divide Things, There Are Pieces Left Over. They Are Called Remainders.
If Katya Had 8 Cans Instead Of 6. She Can’t Divide Them Equally Into 3. There Would Be 2 Left Over. You Can Write This As 8/3=2 Remainders 2, Or 2 r 2. In Your Test You May Get A Question That Asks You How Many Of Something Is Left Over.
*Note: If You Divide On A Calculator, Your Calculator Will Not Give You Remainders. It Will Give You Decimals, Which Are Parts Of A Whole. Calculators Divide Remainders Up Into Equal Parts To Give You An Exact Division Answer. You’ll Be Dividing With Fractions And Decimals In Later Lessons.
Dividends, Divisors & Quotients
48 / 8 = 6 Dividend Divisor Quotient
- The Number Being Divided Is Called The Dividend. It Is The Total Number Of Objects.
- The Number It Is Divided By Is Called The Divisor. It Is The Number Of Groups.
- The Answer Is Called The Quotient. The Quotient Is The Number Of Objects In Each Group.
Dividing Is Un-Multiplying
If You Know Your Multiplication Tables, You Will Be Able To Divide Numbers Too.
Example: 48 Div
