Lesson 11: Global warming Flashcards
What is global warming?
Global warming:
Gradual increase of the Earth’s surface temperature.
How is carbon monoxide formed?
Carbon monoxide formed by incomplete combustion.
What are the effects of carbon monoxide?
- Increase greenhouse effect
- Poisonous for humans: displace oxygen in red blood cells.
How is carbon dioxide formed?
Carbon dioxide is formed by complete combustion.
What are the effects of carbon dioxide?
- Increase greenhouse effect.
- Dizines, headache, breathing issues
How is carbon soot formed?
Product of incomplete combustion.
What are the effects of carbon soot?
- Contributes to global warming.
- Alters clouds: global dimming.
- Breathing issues
What are the 3 greenhouse gases?
- Methane
- Carbon dioxide
- Water vapour
What do greenhouse gases do?
Trap longer waves of reflected infrared radiation from the sun.
What type of radiation is emitted from the sun (include the wavelength)?
Short wave length, infrared radiation.
How is the wavelength of the radiation emitted from the sun different from that reflected from the Earth’s surface?
It has a longer wavelength than the sun’s radiation.
What happens to the radiation from the sun when it reaches Earth?
- Some is absorbed.
- Some is reflected .
What is climate change?
Climate change:
Long term change of weather patterns.
What is the enhanced greenhouse effect?
Enhanced greenhouse effect:
Increasing levels of greenhouse gases that trap more radiation from the sun.
What has caused increased levels of carbon dioxide?
- Deforestation
- Burn fossil fuels
- Peat bog
