If Stressor persists the body actively fights the stressor on a biological level and while some cope more successfuly, there is some cost to the physical or psychological well-being
(pulling all nighter for an exam)

Our ability to fight the stressor declines and negative consequences of stress appear as physical or psychological symptoms
(getting sick after stressing over an exam)
Physiological Effects
Elevated BP, Lower immune system, increase hormone activity, psychophysiological conditions
Harmful Behaviors
Increased smoking, drug or alcohol use, decreased nutrition, decreased sleep
Indirect health-related behaviors
decreased compliance with medical advice, increase in delays in seeking medical advice, decrease in likelihood of seeking medical advice

Conclusion that unpleasant or aversive stimuli cannot be controlled and so a person will cease trying to remedy the aversive circumstance even if they actually can
(staying in an abusive relationship, or not studying since there is a belief it wont make a difference)
