LESSON 2 Flashcards
(39 cards)
What are the 12 major soils of the world?
- Alfisols
- Andisols
- Aridisols
- Entisols
- Gelisols
- Histosols
- Inceptisols
- Mollisols
- Spodosols
- Oxisols
- Ultisols
- Vertisols
Moderately leached soils often found in temperate forests. Shallow penetration of humus, translocation of clay; well developed horizon
Alfisols
Soil formed in volcanic ash, not highly weathered, upper layers dark colored, low bulk density
Andisols
Desert soils, low in organic matter, high in base content, prone to the process of salinization.
aridisols
soil with little or no morphological (horizon) development, associated with recently deposited sediments
entisols
soils with permafrost or soil temperature of 0 degrees or less than 2 m of the surface, formed through the process of gleization
gelisols
organic soils, high content of organic matter, formed in areas with poor drainage, big and muck soils
Histosols
Weakly developed soils. Young soils that are more developed than entisols, often shallow, moderate development of horizon
Inceptisols
Grassland soils, surface horizons dark brown to black with soft consistency, rich in bases, soil of semi-humid regions, prone to the process of calcification
Mollisols
Acidic, sandy forest soils under conifers. Lightly gray, whitish surface horizon on top of the black or reddish B horizon. High in extractable iron and aluminum, formed through the process of podzolization
spodosols
Very weathered soils of tropical land and subtropical environments; red, yellow or gray, rich in kalolinate, iron oxides, and often humus
Oxisols
Acidic, strongly leached, older soils. strong clay translocation, low base content, humid warm climate, formed by process of laterization
Ultisols
Mollisol is formed by the process of
Calcification
Aridisols is formed by the process of
Salinization
Clayey soils that swell when wet. Dark clay shows significant expansion and contraction due to wetting and drying
Vertisols
Spodosol is formed by the process of
Podzolization
Ultisol is formed by the process of
Laterization
What type of soil is less developed?
Entisols
Gelisol is formed by the process of
Gleization
What type of soil is highly developed?
Oxisols
Philippine major soil type (Land area covered)
1.Ultisols (41.5 %)
2. Inceptisols (13.7%)
3. Alfisols (9.9%)
4. Vertisols (3.6%)
