Battle of Shiloh

A
  • Confederates strike first in order to surprise enemy and not allow reinforcements to come
  • 2 armies suffered more than 23,000 casualties- wounded, captured, or missing people
  • After this battle Union troops laid siege to Corinth, forcing Confederates to withdraw, well on its way to controlling Miss. River
  • April 6, 1862, General Sidney Johnson and PGT Beauregard led their troops to attack

Capturing New Orleans

  • After Confederates lost, they lost the Miss. River and it was under Union control
  • Union naval force captured New Orleans, Louisiana under David Farragut
  • Stopped the Confederacy from moving goods from the river to sea
  • Left Vicksburg, Miss. as the only major obstacle left for the Union’s west strategy

  • General Lee split his army into 4 parts in order to confuse General McClellan
  • Lees orders were later found
  • Sept. 17, 1862, 2 armies met at Sharpsburg, Maryland
  • Lee retreated to Virginia, abandoning his attempt to invade the North
  • Union victory

Emancipation Proclamation

A

Sept. 22, 1862 Lincoln said he would issue the Emancipation Proclamation

All enslaved people in Rebel-held territory would be freed on Jan 1,1863

Didn’t free enslaved people right away
Only for places held by Confederacy; Lincoln had no power there
Wasn’t for border states

Changed focus of war from getting the South back but to freeing enslaved people

Battle of Bull Run

  • 30,000 UNION troops commanded by General McDowell attack Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard
  • Spectators from Washington could watch fight from a safe distance
  • Jackson was given nickname “Stonewall”
  • After Union loss, Lincoln named a new general, George B. McClellan to lead his army in the east- called Army of Potomac
  • After Union loss, Lincoln signed 2 bills requesting 1 million soldiers to serve for 3 years
