Lesson 4 Flashcards
(12 cards)
What do we call the properties of living organisms which appear to be common amongst all the different species?
themes of life
True or False:
All of Earth’s species share a common ancestor.
true, it is known as common descent.
List the three themes of life.
1) Physical forms which fit their function.
2) Regulation
3) Depends on a flow of chemicals, energy and information.
What are emergent properties?
Properties that arise or become apparent as a result of a system of multiple different component processes. Life itself is an emergent property.
List the basic levels of biological organisation.
organelles
cells
tissues
organs
organ system
organism
population
communities
ecosystems
biomes (sometimes not included)
The Biosphere
Emergent properties arise at each of these levels as a result of different things interacting or cooperating.
What explains how form fits for function in living organisms?
Evolution
What is meant by “form fits function”?
Characteristics of species are there for a reason as they have evolved as a result of needing to adapt to the environment.
What state does the cooperation of cells within the body create when regulating all of its internal systems?
Homeostasis
Does regulation occur on the microscopic level?
Yes, for example, gene expression is a form of regulation where certain genes are only expressed if and when needed.
What needs to be constantly streaming into life’s system?
energy
What is a closed system in life?
Chemicals because you don’t get more or less.
What does the term “biogeochemical cycle” refer to?
how the amount of chemicals for life to use is a closed system so the chemicals get reused and reused over and over again by different organisms.
