(34 cards)
What is the electronic configuration for calcium in numbers?
2,8,8,2
What does the group number show when figuring out electronic configuration?
It figures out how many electrons there are in the last shell
What does the period number show when figuring out electron configuration?
It shows how many shells there are in an element
What is an ion?
When an atom or a group of atoms lose or gain electrons, an electrically charged particle called an ion is formed.
True or false - when an atom forms an ion the number of protons and neutrons stay the same, so its charge is no longer neutral
True
Sodium has 2 electrons in its 1st shell, 8 in its 2nd shell and only 1 in its 3rd shell. What does Sodium need to do to become an ion? And why does it need to do this?
Lose one electron. this is because an atom becomes an ion by losing or gaining charge. It will lose charge and not gain it as it will be easier to lose one electron than to gain 7.
