What does metocognition help children with?
Metacognition helps children to perform many cognitive tasks more effectively.
What is metamemory?
An individual’s knowledge about memory.
What does metacognition look like at 5-6 y-o?
Children usually know that familiar items are easier to earn than unfamiliar ones.
They know short lists are easier to remember than long ones.
Recognition is easier than recall.
Forgetting becomes more likely over time.
What are the shortcomings of metacognition in childhood?
They don’t understand:
- related items are easier to remember than unrelated ones
- remembering the gist of the stoy is easier than rembering information verbatim
They think they have more memory than they do.
They don’t realize how important memory cues are.
What does metacognition look like in adolescence?
- Increased capacity to monitor and manage cognitive resources to effectively meet the demands of a learning task.
- Increased understanding of strategies
- Can deploy their attention to different aspects of a task
- Better meta-level understanding of strategies - knowing the best strategy to use and when to use it in a learning task.
- Considerable individual variation
