There are four types of Al fi’l al maadi:

1. al fi’l al maadi al mutlaq
2. al fi’l al maadi al qareeb
3. al fi’l al maadi al ba’eed
4. al fi’l al maadi al istimrariyy

al fi’l al maadi al mutlaq is used to denote an action in the past tense without reference to whether the action took place a short or long time ago

al fi’l al maadi al qareeb is used to denote an action done in the near past. it is made by prefexing قد to al fi’l al maadi al mutlaq
