What was the aim of Lewin et al (1992) study?
To investigate whether giving information to heart attack patients would help them improve their psychological and physical health outcomes.
What research method were used by Lewin et al (1992)?
- Field experiment and longitudinal study.
What research design is used by Lewin et al (1992)?
Independent measures design-
Experimental group- manual which included exercise programme, stress management and relaxation programme, self-help treatment.
Control group- standardised information

190 patients who had been admitted to the hospital after experiencing a myocardial infraction
What were the patients diagnosed with?
Mycardial infarction( a heart attack where the blood supply to the heart is suddenly cut off)
Summarise the procedure?
- Random allocation- to control or experimental.
- Experimental group- given manual which consisted of exercise programme, stress mangament and recorded relaxation programme, self-help treatment designed to target intrustive thoughts, anxiety, depression.
- Control group- standard information, time with facillitator, various information leaflets about heart attack recovery.
- Meeting with facillitator- after 1, 3, 5 weeks all patients were contarcted by faciliitator.Experimental- checked/encouraged to keep up with the treatment. Control- general encouragement
What were the results in terms of the psychologial adjustment (Measured by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale)?
Experimental- the rehabilitation program had a long-term positive effect on psychological adjustment, but its impact on depression was only noticeable early on.
What were the results in terms of GP contact and hospital re-admission?
Experimental group- signficantly fewer GP visits and fewer hospital re-admissions in the forst 6 months post-programme.
Who benifited the most from the treatment?
patients who were initially experiencing high levels of anxiety or depression
Name 1 strength and 1 weakness of Lewin et al (1992)?
Strength- ecological validty- naturalistic setting- actual patients in recovery
Weakness- limited generalisbility- only included MI patients- may not be applicable with other medical conditions.
