What is a classic liberal?
Maximising individual freedom, minimising the state and using free market economics
What is a modern liberal
Still maximises individual freedom but believes some state intervention is necessary to create equal opportunity
When was Lib Dem created
When Liberal Party and SDP merged in 1988 with Paddy Ashdown first leader, 1992 20mps, 1997 46, worked close with new Labour till 2001, and talks of coalition
Nick Clegg:
Wanted to move back to more classical liberalism roots, incredibly successful in 2010 debates, Cameron’s “I agree with Nick” gained credibility
2010 manifesto to remove tax for those below £10,000, scrap uni fees, replacing 6 month sentences with community sentences, shared parental leave from work.
Went into collation with CON
“Instantly lost half our student members” due to failed promise to remove tuition fees, bedroom tax lost them support
