What was work life like?
The workers had to be on the cotton field as soon as light in the morning
When the moon was full they must work until the middle of the night
What were the living conditions like?
They weee not allowed light until it was too dark to see
Lived in a single crowded room with no furniture
Beds made from straw and old rags
Wind and rain blew through cracks
Floor soaked like a pigsty
What was the diet like?
Dinner of cold bacon and 10 minutes to swallow
What was rebellion against their masters?
Stealing, poisoning their owner, keeping traditions, uprising
What was passive resistance against owners?
Working slowly, do work badly, damaging tools and crops, pretending to be ill
What was run away from their owners?
Some slaves tried to run away. If they were caught the would get the letter r branded on their cheek or their ear removed. Some peoples feet and toes were mutilated
What was life on a plantation like for women and men?
Women - House work
Men - Labour work
Summary of life on a plantation?
Expected to work 16 hours with little food and water, expected to meet their quota then go to their house. A shed made from cheap materials like wood shared by a whole family
Who controlled plantations?
An overseer would control the plantation and would decide punishments if the slaves would not work hard enough. Would be running the day to day farming with the slave owner with little contact to the slaves
