Ligaments of elbow Flashcards
(17 cards)
ulnar (medial) collateral ligament
- triangular ligament composed of three bands (anterior, posterior, and oblique) on the medial side of the elbow
What side is the primary stabilizer to valgus stress?
anterior portion
radial (lateral) collateral ligament
fan shape ligament on the lateral side of elbow
What does the radial collateral ligament reinforce?
humeroradial articulation, protects against varus stress, and resists distraction to the joint surface
annular ligament
surrounds the radial head and binds the radial head to the ulna to prevent inferior subluxation during traction forces on the forearm
radial head subluxation
most common in younger children
interosseus membrane
functions to transmit compressive and muscle force from radius to ulna
elbow axis orientation
the longitudinal axis of the forearm is abducted relative to the longitudinal axis of the humerus in full extension
What happens as the elbow flexes
the forearm moves medially to be parallel to the longitudinal axis of the humerus in full flexion
what is the carrying angle for men?
5 degrees
What is the carrying angle for women?
10-15 degrees
what are the primary elbow extensors
triceps
anconeus
what are the primary elbow flexors?
biceps brachii
brachialis
brachioradialis
pronator teres
biceps - passive insufficiency
elbow curls in shoulder extension
biceps - active insufficiency
elbow curls in shoulder flexion
triceps - passive insufficiency
elbow press in shoulder flexion
triceps - active insufficiency
elbow kickback in shoulder extension
