Light Flashcards
(18 cards)
REFRACTION
The bending of light rays when they pass through a different medium
Air - glass
AMPLITUDE
The distance between the equilibrium and the peak or trough
PLANE MIRROR
A plane mirror is a normal mirror that doesn’t make you look different
INCIDENT RAY
The incident ray is the ray that comes straight from the source of light
REFLECTED RAY
The reflected ray is a ray of light that has been reflected
MEDIUM
A medium is a type of state
Gas, solid, liquid
SPEED OF LIGHT
The speed of light is 300, 000, 000 meters per second
AUDIBLE RANGE
The audible range is how high to how low you can hear
Humans can usually hear from 20Hz - 20KHz
Some other animals have more audible range
SPEED OF SOUND
The speed of sound varies on what state of matter it is traveling through
Solid = 5000m/s Liquid = 1500m/s Gas = 35m/s
VACUUM
A vacuum is a area that has no particles in it
E.g space
WAVELENGTH
The distance from one place on a wave to the exact same spot on the next wave
TRANSVERSE WAVE
A transverse wave is a wave that goes side to side but going forwards in one direction
A light wave is a transverse wave
LONGITUDINAL WAVE
In a longitudinal wave, the particles of the medium move in a direction
perpendicular to the direction which the wave moves.
A sound wave is a longitudinal wave
ULTRASOUND
Ultrasound is the sound waves with a frequency above 20KHz (above human hearing)
PITCH
The pitch is how high (10KHz) or how low (1Hz) a sound wave is
ECHO
Echoes are reflections of sound waves. They can be reflected off objects. Hard, smooth surfaces are good at reflecting sound while soft, rough surfaces are good at absorbing sound.
REVERBRATION
Reverberation is how sound is reflected
FREQUENCY
The frequency is how many wavelengths there are in a wave
