Light and Electromagnetic Spectrum Flashcards
(22 cards)
What type of waves are electromagnetic waves?
They are transverse. But they are vibrations if electrical and magnetic field.
How are EM waves generated?
By a variety of changes in atoms and their nuclei.
What is the EM spectrum in order?
Radio waves, Microwaves, Infrared, Visible Light. Ultraviolet, X-rays and Gamma Rays
What is the mnemonic for the EM spectrum?
Real Monkeys Insist Very Useful X-mas Gifts.
What EM wave has the longest wavelength but the lowest frequency?
Radiowaves
What EM wave has the shortest wavelength but the highest frequency?
Gamma Rays
Describe the uses and effects of Radio waves
Uses - Communication
Can be transmitted through the body without being absorbed.
Describe the uses and effects of Microwaves
Uses - Cooking food or heating
Can be absorbed which can cause cells to heat up
Describe the uses and effects of Infrared
Uses - Short range communication such as remote controls or electrical heaters, infrared camera to monitor temperature
Mostly reflected or absorbed by skin. It can cause some heating.
Describe the uses and effects of Visible light
Uses - The light we can see. Photography and digital cameras
Can be the skin to heat.
Describe the uses and effects of Ultraviolet
Uses - Used to see fake money and passports
Can cause the skin to burn and a type of ionising radiation. it can damage cells leading to skin cancer.
Describe the uses and effects of X-rays
Uses - For scans of the bones
Very ionising can cause mutations to occur which can lead to cancer. They can pass through the skin and absorbed by deeper tissues.
Describe the uses and effects of Gamma Rays
Uses - Sterilising medical instruments and in treatment and to detect cancer
Very ionising can cause mutations to occur which can lead to cancer. They can pass through the skin and absorbed by deeper tissues.
What happens when the temperature of an object increases?
The intensity of every emitted wavelength increases. However the intensity increases more rapidly for shorter wavelengths than longer wavelengths. This causes a peak wavelength to decrease.
What colour has the lowest frequency?
Red
What colour has the shortest wavelength?
violet
What colour has the highest frequency?
Violet
What colour has the longest wavelength?
red
What are the two types of lenses?
Converging and diverging
What does a converging lens do?
It causes parallel rays of light to be brought together
convex
What does a diverging lens do?
It causes parallel rays to spread out (concave)
What affects the power of the lens?
The curviness
