Q

Reasons to run a Liner?

A
  1. Reduce costs
  2. Isolate problematic zones quickly during drilling
  3. Reduce weight landed on wellhead/well head with limitations
  4. Complete deep wells with lower capacity rigs
  5. Repair damaged casing
  6. Larger casing above the Liner increase completion options
  7. Liner Top Packer provides extra barrier
  8. Improved cement jobs/Mitigate losses
  9. Prevents casing from collapsing on its own weight when set on bottom
  10. Higher chance of getting down to TD: Ability to push by adding weight in running string, and the Liner can rotate (If Liner Hanger system permits, some systems don’t rotate).

Factors in selecting a Liner?

A
  1. Casing size, weight, grade and depth
  2. Liner size, weight, grade, connections/threads and weight
  3. Setting depth of the Liner Hanger
  4. Inclination at the Liner Hanger
  5. Proposed trajectory of the well
  6. Size and weight of the Drill Pipe
  7. Completion/Stimulation operations after the Liner is installed
  8. Weight applied to the Hanger/Liner Hanger
  9. Completion/Wellbore Fluids. Cementing program.
  10. Pressure and temperature. H2S and CO2 concentrations.

Q

How do you disconnect the Drill Pipe from the Liner?

A

You must have a way to connect the Drill Pipe to the Liner. This is done with:
1. Setting Tool
2. Setting Sleeve

Q

What is the Drive Clutch Profile for?

A

The Drive Clutch Profile (DCP) provides the ability to rotate the Liner System by rotating the Drill Pipe. The DCP is part of the Liner Top Packer.

16
Q

How do you set a Hydraulic Liner Hanger?

A

• A ball is either dropped to the Liner Toe or to a ball seat in the setting tool.
• The system pressure is increased to activate the Liner Hanger Slips.

17
Q

What is the RBS/RBC-Rotating Ball Catch?

A

Is a ball seat located in the Setting Tool that rotates and opens to full bore ID after the Liner Hanger is set.

18
Q

What is the Cementing Pack Off?

A

The Cementing Pack Off is a Liner Hanger Setting String Component that maintains a Seal between the work string and the Liner.

19
Q

What is the Retrievable Cement Bushing (RCB)?

A

It is another name for the Cementing Pack Off Bushing, it seals between the ID of the Liner assembly and the slick joint of the Setting Tool.

20
Q

How is the RCB ‘retrieved’ from the well?

A

There is a recess in the slick joint that allows the RCB to be retrieved along with the Running Tool.

21
Q

Can one rotate the Liner Hanger after it has been set?

A

Yes, the Liner Hanger can be rotated after it has been set, but it must have bearings. The Packer has a drive clutch and so does the Setting Tool, once the Tool is released from the packer’s running profile or running threads mechanical, the Setting Tool and Packer’s drive profiles engage, enabling the Liner hanger to be rotated.
