A

Explain the reaction which produces a triglyceride.

A

The three fatty acids are joined to the glycerol via a condensation reaction.
The fatty acids’ carboxylic groups lose a hydrogen and and the glycerol loses 3 hydroxyl molecules.
Three ester bonds are formed (one for each fatty acid) between the glycerol’s carbon and the fatty acids carbon.
3 water molecules are eliminated in the process.

What functions do triglycerides have due to these properties?

A

They are good storage molecules as: they store lots of energy per molecule; they are insoluble so do not affect the osmotic potential of the cell.
They are an important source of (metabolic) water as they release water when oxidised.

Are phospholipids hydrophilic or hydrophobic?
Both, they are amphipathic molecules.

How do multiple phospholipids arrange themselves in water?
They form a micelle: The hydrophilic head attracts the water whilst the hydrophobic tail repels the water and attracts other lipids. This causes the tails of each molecule to face inwards, towards eachother. This makes a circle of phospholipids with no water in the middle.

Give and describe a biological arrangement of phospholipids.

How can you test for lipids?
Sample is placed into a test tube with 2cm^3 of ethanol solution. Shake the mixture vigurously. Add this to water in another test tube. If a white or cloudy emulsion forms then lipids are present.

What does non-polar mean?
A molecule that does not have any electrical charges. (All the atoms charges have cancelled eachother out.)

Are polar molecules soluble in water?
Yes.

A phospholipids polar?
They have a polar head (because of the phosphate group) and a non-polar tail. Thus, the head is hydrophilic and the tail is hydrophobic.

Cell membrane.
