Lipids Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is the main funtion of lipids?
Store energy
List food high in lipids
- Butter 2.Oils 3.Cheese 4.Chocolate 5.Avocado 6.Nuts 7.Fatty fish 8.Olives
What type of food are lipids?
Fats and oils
Were we found Lipids?
Lipids are also biological molecules found in fats and oils.
What are the state of matter that oils and fats have at room temperature?
Fats: solid at room temperature, e.g. butter.
Oils: liquid at room temperature, e.g. vegetable oils.
What are the elements that make up all lipids?
The elements that make up all lipids are:
Carbon
Oxygen
Hydrogen
What are the basic building block of lipids?
Lipids are made up of 2 basic building blocks fatty acids and glycerol molecules.
How the basic building blocks combine?
The glycerol molecule can chemically combine with 3 fatty acid chains to make a lipid.
What are the funtions of lipids?
-storage of energy
-thermal insulation, such as blubber (help to insulate our bodies to stay warm)
-protection, such as around vital organs
-make up cell membranes
What we need to use for testing lipids?
Ethanol
(A type of alcohol)
When there is present of Lipids Ethanol turn……
Cloudy
All of these tests give qualitative or quantitative results.
qualitative results
What is the start color of Ethanol?
Transparent
