lipids (chapter 3) Flashcards
(8 cards)
1
Q
what molecules do lipids contain
A
carbon, hydrogen, oxygen (lipids are macromolecules)
- made of glycerol and fatty acids
2
Q
what are macromolecules
A
molecules not built from repeating units or monomers like polysaccharides.
3
Q
tryglycerides
A
- made up 1 glycerol moldecule and 3 fatty acid molecules
- ester bods (very strong)
- they are a long term memory storage
- thermal insulation to provent heat loss
- protects vital organs
- buoyancy for aquatic animals
4
Q
saturated and unsaturated fats
A
saturated fats have 1 bond and are solid at room temperature
- unsaturated fats have 2 bonds and are liquid st room temperature
5
Q
function of phospholipids
A
- membrane formation
-phosphate head and fatty acid tails
-are found in the cytoplasm of every cell
6
Q
what is cholesterol
A
- Is a sterol
- promotes strength and fluidity of cell membranes
- manufactures vitamin D, steroid hormones and bile
7
Q
cholesterol and cell membranes
A
- cholesterol adds stability to cell membranes, in hotter enviroments more cholesterol is needed than in cool enviroments
8
Q
roles of lipids
A
- membrane and hydrophobic barriers formation
- hormone production
- waterproofing
- buoyancy
- thermal insulation in animlas
- cushioning
