Exegesis
The analysis or interpretation of a portion of a text usually a passage or a key phrase
Hermeneutics
The theoretical examination of the understanding and intrepretation and understanding of text. The feild of study
Hermeneutics Possible approaches
1, Essentionalism: looking for one true meaning with exegetical tools.
2, Pragmatic: each interpretation calls for the redefinition of reading
3, Mixed (Gadamer): interpretation depends on the interpreter
Essentionalism
for every entitiy there are a set of attributes which are necessary to its identity and function
Is understanding and interpretation and cognition even possible?
yes- we should strive at a generalized truth
No- each interpretation speaks only about the interpreter
