Three common causes of lower limb amputation are poor wound healing (often related to diabetes and PAD), trauma, and tumours of bones and joints. Congenital limb deficiencies are also discussed as a cause.

Intermittent claudication is pain in the legs that occurs with activity and is relieved by rest. It is an early sign of Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD).
