What is a role?
The position or purpose someone has in a situation/organisation e.g. job
What is a responsibility?
The specific duties a person is required to carry out to fulfill their role e.g. a procedure
What is the role of employers?
Ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and provide a safe place to work (training and safety equipment)
What is the role of the NHS?
Provide secure environments that are healthy to work in and visit and must provide training and supervision to carry out work safely
What are the 2 roles of local authority?
1) Promote health and safety- Provide guidance, information about roles and responsibilities, and raise awareness of health and safety in different settings.
2) Enforce health and safety standards- Carry out inspections and make recommendations for improvements and if standards aren’t met, they can re-inspect
What is the role of a care manager?
Develop, review and update policies for health and safety and ensure accidents are properly recorded under RIDDOR
What is the role of headteachers and governors?
Ensure safeguarding to protect the welfare of staff, students, visitors and all activities are halthy and safe
What is the role of charitable organisations?
Safeguarding and promoting health and safety for their employees and those who require support e.g Mencap and childline
What is the role of employees?
Use safe working practices to maintain the safety of themselves and others, attend training and report any hazards/accidents
What is the role of the service users?
Follow health and safety instructions provided e.g wet floor signs and ‘no smoking’
What are 3 ways employers can promote health and safety policies?
- Ensuring relevant health and safety policies are in place
- Ensuring all staff are aware of their responsibilities stated in policies
- Ensuring health and safety training is provided
What are 3 ways employers can maintain health and safety policies?
- Keeping up to date with legislation
- Policies updated regularly
- Inductions for new staff
What are 3 ways employers can enforce health and safety policies?
- Regular fire drill practices
- Ongoing supervision and training
- Implementing disciplinary procedures when required
What are 3 ways that employees must use equipment or substances?
-Only used in accordance to training
- Taking care of themselves and people around them
- Not miss-using equipment
What are 2 ways that employees must report serious danger?
- Immediately reporting hazards
- Implementing safeguarding procedures
Whats one way that employees must report shortcomings?
Report shortcomings in health and safety procedures
What are 3 ways that service users can understand health and safety policies?
- Participating in fire drills
- Reporting hazards
- Cooperating with safety instructions and risk assessments
What DC is a consequence for not meeting responsibilities?
Direct costs- Financial implications for the setting e.g. being sued, legal costs and fines
What IC is a consequence for not meeting responsibilities?
Indirect costs- Poor reputation leading to difficulty recruiting staff and loss of trust from employees and service users
What DA is a consequence for not meeting responsibilities?
Disiplinary action- Disiplinary procedures based on the situation e.g warnings and dismissals
May also have increased monitoring (ofsted) and training
What PC&C is a consequence for not meeting responsibilities?
Prosecutions criminal & civil- Prosecution for breaching and negligence if death or serious injury occurs e.g winterbourne
What RFPR is a consequence for not meeting responsibilities?
Removal from professional registers- nurses and teachers etc are registered to a professional organisation and can be ‘struck off’ if they aren’t fit for the role (they are violent, dishonest or break regulations etc)
What CI/H is a consequence for not meeting responsibilities?
Causing injury/harm- Employers, employees and service users can cause harm to themselves if health and safety isn’t followed and employees must be trained properly to work safely
What BI/H is a consequence for not meeting responsibilities?
Being injured/harmed- broken bones, food poisoning and infections etc towards residents, staff and visitors caused by poor standards of care like neglect and abuse
