Local Area Networks Flashcards
(37 cards)
What is a network?
A collection of computers or other computing devices connected by communication media to allow users to share software, hardware, data, and communicate.
Define Local Area Network (LAN).
A network connecting computers in a small area such as a school, university campus, or company offices in one building.
What is a Wireless LAN (WLAN)?
A LAN which uses wireless (radio waves) to communicate rather than cables.
What is an intranet?
An Internet-like environment consisting of web pages related to an organization’s business, accessible only within the organization.
What does network topology refer to?
The mapping of a LAN design, referring to how various nodes, devices, and connections are arranged in relation to each other.
Differentiate between physical and logical network topology.
Physical topology refers to actual connections (wires, cables), while logical topology is how the network is set up, including node connections and data transmission.
Fill in the blank: A network type in which every computer and device is connected to a single cable is called _______.
Bus Topology
List three features of Bus Topology.
- Transmits data only in one direction
- Every device is connected to a single cable
- Cost effective and easy to expand
True or False: In Bus Topology, if one cable fails, only the connected devices are affected.
False
What is Star Topology?
A topology where all computers and devices are connected to a main hub or switch, which manages the flow of data.
List two advantages of Star Topology.
- Fast performance with few nodes and low network traffic
- Easy to troubleshoot and modify
What is Ring Topology?
A topology where nodes are arranged in a circle, allowing data to travel in one or both directions.
What are the two methods of data transmission in Mesh Topology?
- Routing
- Flooding
Define Tree Topology.
A topology with a root node and all other nodes connected to it, forming a hierarchy.
What is Hybrid Topology?
A mixture of two or more topologies, inheriting their advantages and disadvantages.
What does NIC stand for?
Network Interface Controller
What is the role of a server in a network?
A computer that provides shared resources, such as files and Internet access, to network users.
What is a file server?
The most common type of server used to store files accessible by users on the network.
What is the primary function of an email server?
To handle the email needs of an organization.
Fill in the blank: The rate at which data is transferred over media used is known as _______.
Data Transmission Speed
What is UTP?
Unshielded Twisted Pair, the most common cable used for wired networks.
True or False: Fibre optic cables are primarily used for connecting devices within a LAN.
False
What is the purpose of wireless access points?
To allow communication between wireless devices and connect them to a wired network.
What does network security refer to?
Policies put in place to ensure the security of a network by preventing unauthorized access to information.
