localisation of brain function Flashcards
(14 cards)
What does localization of brain function describe?
It describes how certain functions have certain locations in the brain.
What is hemispheric lateralization?
It is the principle that certain functions are principally governed by certain parts of the brain.
What is the function of the frontal lobe?
Higher level cognitive functioning, such as reasoning, decision making, and emotional regulation.
What does the motor area in the frontal lobe do?
Responsible for voluntary movements by sending signals to the muscles in the body.
What might damage to the motor area in the frontal lobe result in?
Inability to be mobile.
Where is Broca’s area located and what is its function?
Located in the left hemisphere, responsible for speech production.
What might an inability to produce coherent words indicate?
Damage to Broca’s area.
What is the function of the parietal lobe?
Processes sensory information and decides what to do with it.
What does the somatosensory (SS) area do?
Receives incoming sensory information from the skin to produce sensations related to pressure, pain, and temperature.
What is processed by the occipital lobe?
Visual information.
What does the visual area in the occipital lobe do?
Receives and processes visual information, including color, shape, and movement.
What is the function of the temporal lobe?
Processes auditory information.
What does the auditory area in the temporal lobe analyze?
Acoustic information, including features like loudness, tempo, and pitch.
Where is Wernicke’s area located and what is its function?
Located in the left hemisphere, responsible for language comprehension.
