The most superficial type of conformity, where individuals go along with others in public without changing private beliefs or behaviours.
What happens to compliance when group pressure stops?
Particular behaviour or beliefs stop as soon as group pressure stops.

Eating only vegetarian food with a particular group of friends, but continuing to eat meat when the group is not present.
What is identification in terms of conformity?
A stronger form of conformity where individuals temporarily adopt the habits or attitudes of a group they value.
How does identification differ from compliance?
Identification involves a short-term change, while compliance does not reflect a change in private beliefs.
Provide an example of identification.
Dressing in the same style as a group of people at college.
What is internalisation in terms of conformity?
The strongest form of conformity, where individuals completely believe and accept a group’s beliefs, norms, and ideas.
What type of change does internalisation lead to?
Long-term change.
Provide an example of internalisation.
Becoming wholly involved in the norms of a group, renouncing former beliefs, and possibly cutting ties with people from the past.
