1

Goals of Locomotion (3)

-improve functional mobility
-enhance body functions
- assist with healing (soft tissues, fractures, post surg.)

2

Four purposes of locomotion?

- provide safety and security
- develop optimal gate pattern
- reduce energy requirements
- protect healing tissues

3

why do we do PROM

-assess mobility of joint
-promote tissue healing (low stress)
-maintain current mobility of joint
-prevent loss of motion
-allow movements under contraindications
-move joint fluid

4

What does PROM not do

-increase ROM
-prevent atrophy
-increase strength
-reduce fat

5

Keep load close, maintain balance, use back muscles isometrically, lift with legs, and dont twist are proper?

body mechanics

6

Mechanical Effects of massage

- increased lymphatic return
-mobilization of bronchial secretions

7

Reflex effects of massage

-sedation
-arousal
-facilitation of muscle contraction

8

Physiological Effects of Massage

-remodeling of CT
-Reduced muscle spasm

9

Psychological Effects of Massage

-improves social interrelations
-improved physical self-image

10

Psychoneurominnunologic effects of massage

-decreased anxiety
-increased cortisol levels
-improved t cell functioning

11

Amenable with massage

-adhesion
-abnormal CT
-postural malalignment
-trigger points

12

Contraindications for Massage

-large wounds
-gross edema with comprised skin
-marked varicosities
-hemorrhage
-metastatic cancers
-sepsis
-shock
-back circulatory system like severe

13

Precaution with Massage

-osteoporosis
-cancer
-allergies
-acute inflammatory conditions
- pitting edema
- kidney infection
