Q

What does the Quote Chartereted streets… chatterterd Thames suggest?

A

Charter is a document stating who owned what. The repetition of charter, shows the forcing of human control over nature, the second use of charter shows the attack on the obsession of poverty rights ans human power and control, the irony is pointed out by blake saying a river cannot be controlled. Blake is trying to get across the cause of suffering is the misuse of human. The rich control poor.

Q

What does the quote ‘Every blackening church appals’ suggest

A

The church is a buliding which is blackening with smoke from industrial revolution, on a metaphoric level this is a criticism, through the color imagery, this symbolizes evil and represents bad. So the church is an organisation, that should of helped the poor but it has ‘blackened’ at the failure to help the poor. The church isn’t doing its job therefore the use of the word appall suggest it shouldn’t exist.

Q

What is the structure of this Poem?

A

There is a repetitive stanza structure and a repeat rhyme scheme, to reflect the relentless repeating overwhelming suffering in the city. The repetition of words reflect how life of suffering is repetitive and inescapable, because of the choices of those in power, who can do something about it.
