Long term memory Flashcards
(6 cards)
Episodic memory
Personal events e.g mothers birthday
Time stamped events
Can relive these events
Semantic memory
Stores knowledge of the word like facts and concepts, e.g the capital city of the UK is London
Not time stamped
Procedural memory
Memory of how to do tasks, including motor skills and habits. e.g playing the piano
Strength
HM - difficulty recalling events from his past, but his semantic memory was unaffected - supporting Tulving’s view that there are different memory stores in LTM
However, researchers had no knowledge of HM’s memory before the accident - lack of control reduces the validity of clinical studies
Clive wearing - intact procedural memory - piano
Weakness
Tulving showed that it’s possible to have a functioning semantic memory alongside a damaged episodic memory. However, it is not possible the other way round - relationship between types of LTM is more complex than Tulving originally believed
RW application
jogging memory - theory states episodic memory is encoded based on how it was experienced - episodic memories van be ‘jogged’ by context cues.
