Q

Strength

A

Baddeley (1966a,b) - we tend to mix up words that sound similar when using STM, but tend to mix up words that have similar meanings when use LTM - STM is acoustic and LTM is semantic encoding - shows that both memory stores are separate and independent. However, not all psychologists accept that the stores are separate
Clive Wearing - unable to make new memories (amnesia), MSM suggests they fails to rehearse information from STM to LTM

Q

Weakness

A

Shallice & Warrington (1970) - KF’s had poor STM when reading digits out loud to him but his recall was far better when he was able to read the digits himself - MSM not a a complete explanation of memory was there must be separate stores for visual and auditory information

Q

RW application

A

improving memory - ‘chunking’ used to remember numbers or letters in groups of three as it takes up item spaces in the STM enabling you to store more information
