LSAT GAMES QUESTION types and approaches Flashcards

1
Q

“could be true” “must be false EXCEPT” What type of Games Question is this, and what type of approach?

A

Could Be True PoE, Eliminate 4 ACs that MBF (note that MBFs MBF in ALL SCENARIOS) Do not pick and go Pick and go errors in CBT and CBF result from underdeducing After you go through eliminating MBFs/MBTs for your CBT and CBF questions, and you still have multiple choices that remain, you UNDERDEDUCED…don’t panic, let your answer choices guide you (rare)

Q

“acceptable” “entire arrangement” “could be true….” but then all ACs are entire arrangements Answer choices represent entire arrangement of entities What type of Games Question is this, and what type of approach?

A

Acceptability (version of of CBT) POE - Rule by Rule (sweep rule thru ACs, kill AC(s) if possible) then sweep next rule thru ACs, etc), easiest Rule first THIS IS ONLY Q TYPE WHERE YOU TAKE RULES TO AC Note: usually this type is 1st question of the set Note if all your rules are expressed in a big chain/branch sequence, then your version of Rule by Rule approach is Branch by Branch Note if all your rules are expressed by if-then rules, then your version of Rule by Rule approach is trigger by trigger (like Photograph game video) Note: the only way to violate an if-then stmt is for the trigger to be true and result false

Q

“could be… complete and accurate list… green” “…at a particular instance” What type of Games Question is this, and what type of approach?

A

Particular Instance (version of of CBT) Note that Particular Instance does not include “any of which” or “each of which” like Eligibility does. I.e. it DOES matter of entities w/i an AC can go together. Treat as CBT (PoE, Eliminate 4 ACs that MBF, (note that MBFs MBF in ALL SCENARIOS)) but remember list needs to be complete (it matters whether entities can go together) Complete = all of them, no more, no less!

Q

“complete and accurate list… any one/each of which … XXX” What type of Games Question is this, and what type of approach?

A

Eligibility (version of of CBT)

Note that Eligibility DOES include “any of which” or “each of which” unlike Particular Instance. I.e. does not matter of entities w/i an AC can go together.

Take one scenario to ACs, do POE. Then go to second scenario, take to ACs, do POE. Might be able to do all the POE only after 2 or 3 scenarios! Saves time as compared to compiling whole list from all scnenarios before even going to ACs!

PoE - Eliminate ACs as you determine entities or places that are or are not eligible, regardless of if they can go together complete and accurate: all of them, no more no less (but this is eligibility so we don’t mean particular instance)

Q

“could be false”

“must be true EXCEPT”

What type of Games Question is this, and what type of approach?

A

Could be False PoE - Eliminate 4 ACs that MBT

(note that MBTs MBT in ALL SCENARIOS)

Do not P&G Pick and go - errors in CBT and CBF result from underdeducing

After you go through eliminating MBFs/MBTs for your CBT and CBF questions, and you still have multiple choices that remain, you UNDERDEDUCED…don’t panic, let your answer choices guide you (rare)

Q

“how many…” What type of Games Question is this, and what type of approach?

A

Numeric: How Many Pick and Go, but go through the entity list, one by one, asking whether or not it should be counted and create a list of entiteis that fit the criterion in the Question No way around just trying each AC through all scenarios

Q

“if substituted for xx rule… same effect” What type of Games Question is this, and what type of approach?

Example: 27:00 here https://bit.ly/2Lfs5VC

First do Must Be True for each ACs(must be true in all scenarios), given the current scenarios (note that the Original Rule in Prompt ORIP does not even matter for this step), cross out those ACs that Could Be False

Second do the What Did ORIP Give Me? test Highlight the stuff that the ORIP directly gave you – do not include stuff that happened to be placed by other rules that just happened to comply with ORIP. Find specific step that ORIP gave you, highlight that.

Third do Give me My Shit Back Test – Check which remaining AC would give you exactly what you highlighted from What Did ORIP Give Me test

A

Substitution (by far, most difficult Logic Q), no more than 1 time per LSAT **draw new scenarios so you don’t mark up smthg you need again!** “same effect” means in light of all other rules staying constant Summary - it’s a 2-part check! 1.) AC Must Be True in All Scenarios, Already! 2.) AC, when applied, will guarantee that the original rule is true in all scenarios! PoE – Eliminate ACs that do “too much” or “too little” as compared to the substituted rule 1. ID rule to be subsitutted, think how it fits into master diagram 2. go to ACs The correct AC will 1. do NO MORE than the original rule so the AC must be true in your master diagram -if an AC contains info that is NOT ALREADY true according to the Master Diagram, then the AC DOES MORE than the orginal rule 2. do NO LESS than orign rule, so it must get the original rule back –if an AC does not guarantee that the orig rule is true, then it DOES LESS than the original rule

Q

“…(asks for exact or approx placements of one or more entities)…” What type of Games Question is this, and what type of approach?

A

Partial Determination Pick and Go - The correct AC will narrow to one scenario and place the targeted entity or entities as indicated by the Q OR it will allow multiple scenarios but place the targeted entity or entities in the exact same places in each scenario

Q

“If Danuchix places third, then…” What type of Games Question is this, and what type of approach?

A

If Placement (this is not a Question type, it is just new info that precedes subtypes of all the other Games Questions (except Sub Questions)) First, stop at the comma of the Q and jot down that new rule. Get some work done. Play it out! **draw new scenarios so you don’t mark up smthg you need again!**

Q

“If Danuchix places higher than Ed, then…” What type of Games Question is this, and what type of approach?

A

If Rule (this is not a Question type, it is just new info that precedes subtypes of all the other Games Questions (except Sub Questions)) First, stop at the comma of the Q and jot down that new rule. Connect existing rules to it, play out scenario. Get some work done. Do you play it out? It varies. If the new rule combines with EXISTING rules from the prompt well enough to give you a lot of info in the RULE FORM, then do not complete a play out. If the new rule does not combine as such, then play it out. **draw new scenarios so you don’t mark up smthg you need again!**

Q

“If instead of Danuchix placing higher than Ed, Danuchix places lower than Ed…” What type of Games Question is this, and what type of approach?

A

If They Change or Suspend a Rule! (this is not a Question type, it is just new info that precedes subtypes of all the other Games Questions (except Sub Questions)) It varies greatly, similar to If Rule **draw new scenarios so you don’t mark up smthg you need again!**
