The Great Vowel Shift

A

-Gradual change of vowel pronunciation from 14th-18th century.
-Pronunciation of long vowels changed so the tongue moved closer to the roof of the mouth.
-Widened gaps between graphemes and phonemes.
-Short vowels became long vowels (ME=loss EME=lose).
-Long vowels became diphthongs (ME=hoose EME=house).
