1

Where are lymph nodes found

all over the body and along lymphatic vessels

2

what are lymphatic capillaries

thin walled capillaries
designed to pick up any fluid that leaks into the tissues from the blood stream and return it to your circulatory system

3

how does excess fluid outwith the blood vessels occur

sometimes plasma proteins move out of the capillaries and so fluid does not come back leading to a build up

4

how is backward flow prevented in lymphatic vessels

valves
smooth muscle in their walls which causes the fluid to move forward
skeletal muscle when contracting, squeezes that part of the body causing fluid to move ahead

5

where in the body are there no lymphatic capillaries

CNS
the eye

6

why does the eye have no lymphatic capillaries

it has its own drainage system

7

what is the largest lymphatic vessel in the body

the thoracic duct

8

where does the thoracic duct drain into

the venous angle between the left subclavian vein and the left internal jugular vein

9

what does the outer cortex contain

lymphatic nodules that contain mostly B cells

10

what happens in the lymph nodules

B cells proliferate into plasma cells - this is called the germination centre

11

what is the inner cortex made up of

t cells

12

what is the medullary cord made up of

B lymphocytes and plasma cells

13

what does biological filtration in the lymph nodes allow

it gives macrophages a chance to remove microorganisms and other injurious particles

14

what does mechanical filtration in the lymph nodes allow

it physically stops particles from going further into the body

15

what is the tonsil made up of

lymphatic tissue
it is non encapsulated

16

what are the invaginations in the tonsils called

blind crypts

17

what do lymph nodes do

filter the lymphatic fluid for microorganisms and foreign particles
