Lymphatic system Flashcards
(9 cards)
1
Q
What are the functions of the lymphatic system?
A
- Protect body from illness
- Maintain fluid levels in the body
- remove cellular waste and digestive tract fat
- acts as one way drainage system
2
Q
What are the main components of the lymph system?
A
- Vessels
- Lymph nodes
- Lymph ( a colourless fluid carried in the tubes of system),
3
Q
Where are the locations of major lymph nodes?
A
- Neck
- Armpits
- Groin
4
Q
What are the lymph organs?
A
- Spleen, located upper left side of the body, fist-sized, filters out damaged cells also get rid of pathogens as it contains white blood cells
- Thymus, located between the lungs produces white blood cells and T cells, T cells mature in the thymus
- Tonsils, located rear of pharynx, fight infection as they are the first defense in the immune system, stop bacteria from entering the body and swell up as a response to infection,
5
Q
What are Lymphocytes?
A
- This is a types of white blood cells in the immune system
- T cells, help protect body from infection
- B cells, produce antibodies, also recognise antigens of bacteria and viruses
- Phagocytes, can ingest and sometimes digest pathogens, it does this by extending its cytoplasm
6
Q
What is Lymph?
A
- Lymph is a colourless fluid that travels around the lymph vessels
7
Q
What does the lymphatic system do?
A
- Lymph contains lymphocytes (White blood cells) this helps to fight infection
- It acts as a one-way drainage system transporting fluid from body tissues into the blood circulation
- It gets rid of waste products produced by cells
8
Q
How does it get drained?
A
The lymph fluid is drained out by the lymphatic system where it travels to lymph nodes, to stop backflow the lymph vessels have one-way valves and muscular walls that contract to move the lymph forward
9
Q
How does it link to the immune system?
A
- Lymph nodes filter lymph, destroying or trapping anything harmful, lymph nodes contain lymphocytes (white blood cells) which kill and breakdown harmful cells, this stops harmful pathogens from entering our bloodstream
