Lymphatic System Flashcards
(17 cards)
Lymph
means clear water and describes the fluid in the lymphatic vessels & lymph nodes
what contains the lymphatic system
lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes
3 steps to the lymphatic system
- returns fluid back to the heart
- helps large molecules enter the blood
- helps with immune surveillance
where does lymph come from
the blood in the arteries is under a lot of pressure because it needs to reach every place in the body.
Those arteries branch out into narrower branches. They become arterioles and then capillaries
how can red blood cells too big to fit into the capillaries
they have special proteins and fluid that helps it go through
how much fluid seeps out of the capillaries
20 liters that becomes part of the interstitial fluid between cells
about 17 liters gets reabsorbed back into the capillaries
what happens to the three liters left in the tissue. How can it make its way back into the blood?
the lymphatic systems collects the excess interstitial fluid and returns it into the blood. It is now called lymph
Lymphatic vessels
are a network of thin, tube like structures that play a crucial role in the lymphatic system.
These vessels help manage a special kind of water called lymph
what happens to the water fluid in the blood vessels
little drops of water leak out from the blood vessels
Lymph nodes
There are these cleaning stations called lymph nodes. They are small, bean shaped structures that play a crucial role in the immune system
They are distributed throughout the body, filtering lymph fluid and removing harmful substances, such as bacteria virus and cancer cells
