Lymphatic System Flashcards
(11 cards)
What are the main parts of the lymphatic system?
Lymph nodes, lymph vessels, lymph capillaries, tonsils, thymus, spleen, bone marrow
What is the function of lymph nodes?
Filter lymph and contain white blood cells to fight infections
Where is the thymus located and what does it do?
Under the sternum; creates a special type of white blood cell
What does the spleen do?
Filters red blood cells and produces white blood cells
What are the main functions of the lymphatic system?
• Maintains fluid balance
• Fights infections
• Transports lymph back into the circulatory system
What is lymphadenopathy?
A condition that causes swollen lymph nodes due to infection (viral or bacterial)
What is lymphoma?
A type of cancer where lymph cells mutate and grow uncontrollably
What is lymphedema?
Swelling caused by a buildup of lymph fluid due to blockage
How does active living support the lymphatic system?
• Improves lymph flow
• Enhances immune function
• Reduces swelling and prevents fluid buildup
• Promotes healthy circulation
How do vaccines protect public health?
Introduce harmless pathogens so the immune system can make antibodies and “memory cells” to fight real diseases
What is the immune response to vaccines in high school students?
The body creates antibodies and memory cells, offering long-term protection against illness
