Lymphatic System Flashcards
This flashcard deck was created using Flashcardlet's card creator
Where are lymphatic capillaries found?
Interspersed among blood capillary beds
What substances comprise lymph?
- Interstitial fluid
- Solutes
- Foreign materials
What is the pathway back to the blood from lymph fluid?
Lymphatic vessels merge to form lymphatic trunks, which merge to form lymphatic ducts.
The right lymphatic duct returns lymph from the upper right side of the body to veins at the junction of the right subclavian and internal jugular veins.
What is the general function of T, B and NK cells?
All three migrate through the lymphatic system and search for the presence of antigens.
What do receptors on the surface of a Helper T cell recognize? Are they (the receptors) general or specific?
They express a plasma membrane coreceptor that can recognize a particular antigen.
Name the two types of T cells.
Helper T-lymphocytes and Cytotoxic T-lymphocytes
Describe 2 ways Helper T cells initiate an immune response.
- Presenting the antigen to other lymphocytes
2. Secrete cytokines which are chemicals that activate other lymphatic cells
What is the job of Cytotoxic T cells? Which cells are responsible for activating them?
Cytotoxic T cells come in direct contact with infected or foreign cells and kill them.
Acts only after it is activated by a helper T cell.
How are B-lymphocytes distinctly different from T cells?
They produce antibodies (immunoglobin) for a specific antigen.
Which cell type “turns on” B cells?
Helper T-lymphocytes
What 2 cell types do B cells differentiate into following antigen exposure?
Plasma cells and memory B-lymphocytes
How are NK cells different from T and B cells?
NK cells can kill a wide variety of infected cells and some cancerous cells.
Where do all lymphocytes originate? Where do T cells mature?
Red bone marrow; Thymus
