M12.02 Flight Control Flashcards
(26 cards)
Roll, pitch and yaw axis also known as
X,y and z
What does the cyclic do ?
Changes the pitch of individual blades to give directional control
What do balance springs do ?
Return the cyclic to the neutral position when input is released
What does the collective do?
Changes the pitch angle of all blades at the same time
What does the mixing unit do?
Mixes cyclic and collective input so they don’t interfere with each other
What is the basic function of the smash plate ?
Translates stationary inputs to the main rotor
Types of tail hub design?
Hinge mounted
Flex beam
Fully-articulated type
EDAT
How does the NOTAR system do directional control ?
A rotating nozzle at the back of the tail boom
Types of main rotor heads ?
Fully articulated
Semi-rigid
Rigid
Hinge and bearing-less
Types of dampers (4)?
Hydraulic damper
Multiple disc
Elastomeric damper
Viso-elastic damper
Main rotor blade types (3)?
Wooden
Metal
Composite
What perks does composite blades have over wood/metal
Better strength to wait ratio and a slow failure mode
3 ways of blade attachment ?
Blade bolts
Taper pin
Attachment pins
What does SAS stand for ?
Stability augmentation system
What does force trim release system comprise of ?
Magnetic clutches and springs
Why do some helis have adjustable stabilisers ?
Moves so that the nose is in the best position for flight (apache uses this for firing)
What forces does control rods transmit ?
Push-pull forces
What do bell cranks allow
For control inputs to be transferred from one rod to another
What forces can control cables transmitt?
Only transmits pulling forces
What does a quadrant do in a control cable system ?
Ensures positive transmission in both directions
What are turnbuckles used for?
To adjust control cable length
What does tension regulator do ?
Regulates tension with temp change
What does artificial feel do ?
Allows pilot to feel control loads
What is static balance?
Getting the C of G to be located in the axis of rotation
