M6 L1 Flashcards

1
Q

How does the chemical structure differ between RNA and DNA?

A
  • RNA = 2 OH (2nd carbon contains oxygen)
  • DNA = 2 carbon is H only, lacks oxygen

Q

What is the difference in the CHEMICAL structure in-between Uracil and THYMINE?

A
  • In Uracil (carbon 5 ) is attached to H
  • IN thymine carbon 5 is attached to CH3 methyl group

Q

How is the secondary sequence of an RNA formed, include any relevant NAME of the type of the sequence?

A
  • The secondary sequence is achieved by PALINDROMIC sequences within RNA , which complementarily pair with each giving RNA a stem-loop structure
  • coding DNA, contains palindromic sequence which goes like = 5’ —-ACG——–CGT——3’
  • This is transcribed into RNA as= 5’—-ACG——CGU—3’
  • ACG and CGU complementarily base pair with each other and from loop giving the secondary sequence its structure

Q

In which 3 ways is RNA regulated?

A
  • Synthesis - transcription synthesis can be tuned off or on (lac operon)
  • Regulated DEGRADATION - transferrin receptor mRNA
  • Translation efficiency - protein can control the usage of certain RNA
