Macbeth - shows the dagger isn’t real, its a hallucination , a metaphor
“shall sleep no more”
Macbeth - repetition, Macbeth knows he’s sinful, links to the jacobean audience believes if you had restless sleep you had done something that went against god
“places a fruitless crown”
Macbeth - a metaphor to symbolise that their efforts are useless and its all wasted due to them not having an heir
“il not fight with thee”
Macbeth - juxtaposition from how Macbeth is seen in the beginning of the play, knew he was going to lose.
“top-full of direst cruelty”
Lady Macbeth - is trying to remove her femininity, take away her remorse, supernatural, going against nature
” then you were a man”
Lady Macbeth - questions Macbeths masculinity, “then” is pivotal implying he isn’t a man, foreshadows Macbeth’s downfall.
“so brainsickly of things”
Lady Macbeth - thinks everything will be ok if Macbeth will stop feeling so guilty. Ironic because she kills herself later on as her guilt had driven her too far.
“my hands are your colour; but i shame to wear a heart so white”
Lady Macbeth - symbolises she feels no guilt, embarrassed t have a pale, weak heart. Red is associated with guilt and crime, white represents innocence and purity.
“thou play’dst most foully for’t”
Banquo - getting suspicious of Macbeth, links back to the witches
” but that myself should be the root and farther of many kings”
Banquo - coming to a realisation that the witches prophecies are coming true therefor means he actually is the farther of many kings
“if you can look into seeds of time”
Banquo - metaphor using it show that if they know the outcomes why can’t the witches say a prophecy on himself
“vaulting ambition, which o’erleaps itself”
Ambition- Metaphor, Macbeth is unwilling to move ahead with his plan, and his acknowledgment that his ambition is leading him down a dangerous path
“to be thus is nothing, but to be safely thus’
Ambition - Macbeth says this after he is king, feeling restless, Finds it meaningless to be king. Him giving in to his ambition and murdering Duncan hasn’t brought him peace, only left him paranoid and anxious. Set’s of a chain reaction of him committing to violent actions in order to remain his power he has gained. Repetition.
” and chastise with the valour of my tongue”
Ambition - Lady Macbeth is persuading Macbeth to kill Duncan and become king, abstract noun “valour” has connotations of defiance, bravery and fearlessness which creates the impression that Lady Macbeth intends of defying societal norms in terms control of her husband.
” the rump-fed ranyon cries”
Supernatural - every interaction with them always something bad happens
“ in thunder lighting or rain “
Witches - pathetic fallacy, links to great chain of being
“ fair is foul and foul is fair”
Witches -parallelism, contest two things close together, everything isn’t as it seems, can be pretty on outside but hold the most darkness within
“Hail”
Witches - symbolises respect Macbeth
