What do we need nutrients for?

What is each food made up of?
A mixture of nutrients each with a specific role in the body
What will happen if we don’t eat enough nutrients?
- lose weight
- become ill
- starve
What happens when we lack certain nutrients?
We will show sights of deficiency
What will happen if we eat too many nutrients?
We may become obese
What does a balanced diet provide?
The necessary nutrients in the right sized portions and quantities
How do you follow a balanced diet?
By eating a variety of foods with a range of nutrients
What do some nutrients depend on to work?
Some nutrients depend on other nutrients to work
What two groups can nutrients be divided into?
1) macro-nutrients eg protein, fat, carbohydrates
2) micro-nutrients eg vitamins and minerals
What are the functions of protein?
- growth, maintenance and repair of cells
- production of enzymes and hormones
- provide energy if the diet doesn’t have enough fat/carbohydrates
What type of people need increased amounts if protein?why?
1) babies; to grow properly as they need to double their weight in a year
2) pregnant women; the baby takes protein from the foods she eats
3) elderly; for more body repair as they can’t do much
What disease is caused by a lack if protein?
Kwashiorkor
Why shouldn’t you eat foods too high in protein?
Excess protein turns into fat
What do carbohydrates provide the body with?
Its main source of energy
Where is starch found and what type of energy does it provide the body?
It I found in many basic foods and provides the body with slow release energy
How much of our total energy intake should be starchy carbohydrates?
Half
What are sugars a form of?What amount should it be eaten in?
Carbohydrates, it should only be eaten in small amounts- 60g per day
What does sugar provide the body with?
Instant energy followed by an energy slump
What does NSP stand for?
Non-starch polysaccharide
What foods are high in NSP?
- whole meal bread
- whole meal pasta
- beans/lentils
What foods are low in NSP?
- white bread
- white pasta
- white flour
What foods are high in sugar?
- chocolate
- sugar coated cereals
- sweets/cakes
