What is the difference between megaloblastic and non-megaloblastic anaemia?
Megaloblastic characterised by presence of immature red cells (megaloblasts) while non-megaloblastic characterised by just large red cells
Give 5 causes of non-megaloblastic anaemia
Liver disease Hypothyroidism Pregnancy Alcohol Smoking
Haematological malignancy:
- myelodysplasia
- pure red cell aplasia
- myeloma
- reticulocytosis

B12 deficiency with neurological involvement, what is the most likely diagnosis?
Subacute degeneration of the spinal cord
What is the treatment for B12 deficiency?
Neurological involvement:
- seek urgent specialist haematology advice
- hydroxocobalamin IM injection 1mg on alternative days
No neurology involvement:
- hydroxocobalamin IM injection 1mg 3 days a week
